Never rebid a preëmpt

Any questions?

If you open or overcall with a weak two or three (or four, or five) bid and your partner passes or raises your suit, your next bid should be a pass. Your bid already described your hand quite explicitly, giving captaincy of the auction to your partner, whose decision it now is where the game should be played.

Bridge in rock lyrics

Post your examples here.

In "Suddenly It's A Folk Song," Future of the Left sing:

Make a living from contract bridge
Boring, but magnificent
Surely you're amazed by it
Suddenly these processes
Do not seem significant
Now we are not worthy of friends

Any others?

And no, the Wilcannia Mob is not saying "then we go home and play some bridge," more's the pity.

Pavement, "Grounded": "He phoned the fallen daughter in the sauna playing contract bridge."

Awesome.

Surely there are more than two in the world. Radiohead and String are notorious bridge players but does that seep into their lyrics ever?

When I get a rough deal I am always encouraged by Rihanna's lyrics "When the world has dealt its cards / If the hand is hard, together we'll mend your heart"

Bridge Luuuhs the Kids

Or rather, a couple of very rich men plan to make the kids luuuuh bridge. (HT: Kate Silver)

P.S. I owe everyone else involved w/this blog an apology for longstanding noninvolvement. Moved to Seattle, started freelancing full-time, and though there's apparently a floating Thursday-night game at a good pub/restaurant I could walk to, I've gotten lazy. That will remedy itself in time, especially if Gates and Buffett have anything to say about it.)

Bridge mysteries

These novels -- Murder In Duplicate and others -- appear to be self-published, available from Amazon or from bridgemysteries.com. I'm curious.

Browsing the bridge section of the NYPL (and then, just now, obviously, the web), I've noticed quite a bit of bridge-themed fiction. I refer not to "Five Weeks to Winning Bridge" and other such pipe dreams, but actual novels that hinge on cards for their drama. I have read none of these:

Bridge Below the Belt

The Bridge Adventures of Robin Hood

Richelieu Plays Bridge

Death By Contract

and many more.

Watch this space for my own serialized bridge fiction, Clever Pun TK.

New crew member

I know sometimes it's easy for you to forget that this is a group blog, but it is. Please (with the enduring silence that I've come to understand as your warm approval) welcome new poster Lisa, weighing in with a West Coast view of things bridge! You've seen her coasters.

The Bridge Game (2003, not rated)

Don't bother renting this movie for the bridge content. The ladies are ostensibly there for a game, and they even deal out some cards, but they get sidetracked talking about their lives and problems and never even play a hand!

Anyone have a good juicy card movie to suggest?
